From: International Celtic Congress, Wales Branch Subject: Conference, 22–27 July 2002 Date: 21 May 2002 Celts will gather in Trinity College, Carmarthen between July 22 and 27 to discuss a subject of great importance to all six countries, ie. Language revival in the community. The following speakers have been nominated to address the conference. SCOTLAND: John Macpherson – Has been appointed by the Scottish Parliament to chair the Taskforce on Public Funding for Gaelic. Was born on the island of North Uist. CORNWALL: Ray Chubb – Chair of Agan Tavas (Our Language), owner of a publishing company producing Cornish language publications. Ray and his wife learned Cornish as adults, and their two teenage sons are natural Cornish speakers. WALES: Cefin Campbell - Chief Executive of Myrddin Language Enterprises and Chair of Language Enterprises of Wales. A pioneer in the field of language revival and maintenance in the community, he is known as an authority on the sociology of language within and outside Wales. IRELAND: Seosamh Mac Donncha - Chief Executive of Foras na Gaeilge, a body set up after the Good Friday Peace Agreement to promote the Irish language in the north and south of Ireland. BRITTANY: Mikael Baudu - Head of the News Department of TV Breizh (Breton TV). Married to Morwenna Jenkin, who is Cornish and graduated in Celtic languages from the University of Wales Aberystwyth. They have three multilingual children. ISLE OF MAN: Phil Gawne - Began learning Manx Gaelic when a student at Liverpool University. Active in the Gaelic Society and one of the pioneers of the Manx Nursery School Movement. Following this initiative, the first primary school class teaching through the medium of Manx was established in 2001. These speakers can be heard on July 23 and 24 in Trinity College. From: The International Celtic Congress, Wales Branch Subject: International Conference, Trinity College, Carmarthen, 22-27 July Date: 2 July 2002 Speakers from Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, Ireland, Brittany and the Isle of Man will be in Trinity College on the 23rd and 24th of July to confer on a matter of greatest importance to all six countries, i.e. Language revival in the community. The speaker for Wales will be Cefin Campbell, Chair of Mentrau Iaith Cymru. Congressists will have the opportunity to socialise and travel during the week. They will visit the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Saint Fagan’s and Cardiff. Evening concerts are scheduled – a Youth Concert with the dancers of Aelwyd Hafodwenog on the 24th, a Twmpath led by Anian on the 25th, and to conclude on the 26th in the Theatre Halliwell, musicians from the other five Celtic countries will join the male choir, Bois y Castell, and young harpist Rhian Haf Bevan in a feast of Celtic entertainment.
