Languages in Afghanistan

The map below is taken from the National Atlas of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (Warsaw: Geokart Organization for Surveying and Cartography, [1985], ISBN 83-00-02327-5), p. 29, and shows the major languages of Afghanistan as elaborated in the Afghan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office, following the sources of the Afghan Central Statistics Office and local authorities. The legend lists the languages on the map as Paštu, Dari, Uzbeki, Turkmani, Balūči, Nūrıstāni, Pašayi, and Qırǧızi. The SIL Ethnologue, which lists 45 languages for Afghanistan, has entries for these as Southern Pashto, Eastern Farsi, Southern Uzbek, Turkmen, Western Balochi, Kati, Southwest Pashai, and Kirghiz.
