Evertype גיט יעצט אַרױס די דאָזיקע אױסגעבעסערטע אױפֿלאַגע.		Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carroll, the pen-name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson of Oxford University in England. The book was first published in 1865, and since then has been translated into many languages. The first translation of this book into Yiddish was mine, completed in January 2012 (Zur-Ot Publishing House, Jerusalem). Evertype is now publishing this second corrected edition.
בשעת איבערזעצן אױף ייִדיש, איז מײַן ציל געװען צו בלײַבן געטרײַ צו דעם ענגלישן מקור: צו דעם סיפור־המעשה, צו די העלדן און זײערע כאַראַקטערס; און דער הױפּט איבערצולאָזן די טיפֿקײט און דעם גײַסט פֿון דעם בוך. פֿונדעסטװעגן האָט מען באַדאַרפֿט צופּאַסן די שפּאַס־לידער, די װערטלעך, די אידיאָמען, און בעיקר לואיס קאַראָלס װערטשפּילן, צו דער ייִדישער שפּראַך און צו דעם לעבנס־שטײגער װאָס איז באַקאַנט צו די לײענערס. װײַל ײדיש איז געװען פֿאַרשפּרײט איבער מיזרח-אייראָפּע, זענען פֿאַראַן אין דער שפּראַך װערטלעך און אױסדרוקן װאָס שפּיגלען אָפּ די ייִדישע איבערלעבונגען אין דער געגנט אין די פֿריערדיקע יאָרהונדערטער. איך װעל ברענגען עטלעכע בײַשפּילן און אױפֿקלערונגען פֿון די צופּאַסונגען און שינוײם װאָס זענען פֿאַראַן אין דער ייִדישער איבערזעצונג:—		As I was translating into Yiddish, my aim was to remain faithful to the English source, to the plot, the characters and their qualities; and mainly to retain the depth and spirit of the book. At the same time, the nonsense songs, the sayings, idioms and particularly Lewis Carroll’s plays on words had to be adapted to Yiddish and to the lifestyle familiar to its readers. Since Yiddish was prevalent across Eastern Europe, there are sayings and expressions that reflect the Jewish life experience in this region in previous centuries. I will present some examples and clarifications of the adaptations and changes made in this translation:—
אין דעם קאַפּיטל VII, ‟אַ משוגענע טײ־מסיבה‟, האָט דאָס שפּאַס־ליד געקריגן מאָטיװן פֿון ײדישע װיגלידער.		In Chapter VII, “A Mad Tea-Party”, the nonsense song has been given motifs of Jewish lullabies.
און די מעשה פֿון די דרײַ שװעסטער איז אױפֿגעבױט אױף דעם אױסדרוק ‟אַ שמאַלצגרוב‟ מיטן באַדײַט פֿון חתונה האָבן מיט אַ רײַכן מאַן.		The story of the three sisters is based on the expression “a pit of fat” in the sense of marrying someone wealthy.
דאָס װאָרט ‟חזיר‟ איז ניט אין דעם טעקסט. עס איז פֿאַרביטן געװאָרן מיט אַלטערנאַטיװן.		The word “pig” appears nowhere in the Yiddish text and has been replaced by alternatives.
אין דעם ענגלישן מקור זענען דאָ אַ סך װערטלעך און אידיאָמען. אױב עס איז פֿאַראַן אַ ייִדישע פּאַראַלעל, איז זי באַנוצט געװאָרן װאָרט בײַ װאָרט. אין אַנדערע פֿאַלן האָב איך אױסגעקליבן ייִדישע װערטלעך און אידיאָמען װאָס האָבן די זעלבע פּירושים, אָדער לכל־הפּחות די זעלבע כװנה. די װאָרטשפּילן, אױף װעלכע לואיס קאַראָל איז געװען אַ מײַסטער, זענען פֿאַרטױשט געװאָרן אױף ייִדישע װאָרטשפּילן דורך נוצן די זעלבע טעכניקעס װי אין דעם מקור. צום בײַשפיל: אַ װאָרט מיט צװײ פּירושים, צװײ װערטער מיט דעם זעלבן קלאַנג אָדער אַן אַנדער אױסלײג, אַ װאָרט װאָס איז אױסגעשניטן געװאָרן פֿון אַן אַנדער װאָרט. נאָך אַ טעכניק איז צו פֿאַרקרימען אַ װאָרט, און דאָס נײַע װאָרט װאָס קומט אַרױס האָט אַ גאַנץ אַנדער סעמאַנטישן תחום. בײַשפּילן זענען פֿאַראַן אין דעם שמועס װעגן די טעמעס פֿון לערנען אין דער שול אונטערן ים.		In the English original, there are many sayings and idioms. Where there is a Yiddish parallel, it was used verbatim. In other cases – I chose sayings and idioms in Yiddish with the same meaning, or at least the same intent. The plays on words, at which Carroll was a master artist, were changed to puns in Yiddish using the same techniques as in the original, for example: a word with two meanings, two words with the same sound but spelled differently, a word derived from another word. Another technique is the distortion of a word, where the new word belongs to a completely different semantic field (e.g. in the conversation about the subjects studied at the school under the sea).
איבערזעצנדיק די לידער אױף ײדיש, איז געװען װיכטיק פֿאַר מיר צו בלײַבן געטרײַ צו דעם אינהאַלט און צו דעם ריטעם, און אַ ביסל װינציקער צו דער גראַמענס־סכעמע.		In translating the poems into Yiddish, it was important for me to remain faithful to the rhythm and the contents, and somewhat less to the rhyme scheme.
די נעמען פון די מערסטע העלדן זענען געבליבן אַזוי ווי אין דעם מקור. נאָר דרײַ חיות—די קאַץ דינקע, די יאַשטשערקע בײלי און דאָס באַשעפֿעניש פּײסי—האָבן געקריגן דימינוטיוון און צערטל־סופֿיקסן. לױט די כללים פֿון דער שפּראַך איז דער מין פֿון עטלעכע חיות געטױשט געװאָרן—די מױז, די טשערעפּאַכע, און אַנדערע חיות—װאָס זענען פֿעמינין אין ייִדיש און מאַסקולין אין ענגליש. ‟קאָמפּליצירטע‟ און יחיד־במינודיקע נעמען זענען איבערגעזעצט געװאָרן גלײַך װי זײ זענען אין ענגליש. אַזױ איז דער March Hare געװאָרן אַ ‟מאַרץ־האָז‟, און דער Dormouse איז געװאָרן אַ ‟דרעמלמױז‟ (אַ מױז װאָס כאַפט אַ דרימל די גאַנצע צײט, כאָטש זי איז בכלל ניט קײן מױז).		Most of the characters’ names stayed as they were. Only three animals—the cat Dinah, Bill the Lizard, and the creature Pat—were given diminutive pet names. Also, in accordance with the rules of language, the gender of some of the animals were changed, including the mouse and the turtle, which are both feminine in Yiddish. “Complicated” names of unique animals were translated as is into Yiddish. Thus the March Hare becomes “Marts-Hoz” (the hare of March) and Dormouse becomes “Dremlmoyz” (a sleepy mouse, even though this isn’t a mouse at all).
צום סוף, זאָגט דער קלײנער אָדלער צו דעם עוף דאָדאָ: ‟!Speak English‟ (‛רעד ענגליש!‛). דאָס איז איבערגעטױשט געװאָרן אין דער איבערזעצונג אױף: ‟רעד קלאָר!‟ און דאָס איז געװען, באמת, דער ציל פֿון דער איבערזעצונג: אָפּצושפּיגלען דעם אָריגינעלן ענגלישן טעקסט אַזױ קלאָר און ענלעך װי עס איז נאָר געװען מעגלעך, מיט שינוײם און צוגאָבן װאָס מאַכן דאָס נאָך קלאָרער און אײַנגענעמער פֿאַר די ייִדישע לײענערס.		And finally, the little eagle says to the Dodo: “Speak English!” This was changed in the translation to “Red klor!” (‘Speak clearly!’). And this was, indeed, the purpose of the translation: to reflect the original English text as closely and clearly as possible, with changes and additions that would make it clearer and more enjoyable for readers of Yiddish.
