A new (1993) Uzbek alphabet

The original document was in Cyrillic; I have retyped the document in the romanization specified in the document itself (so far as I could read the fax) and written the Cyrillic letters in the table according to their names in ISO/IEC 10646.

The romanization scheme is fairly straightforward; the only criticism I would have of it is that it uses LATIN J WITH STROKE to represent CYRILLIC ZHE WITH DESCENDER. There is nothing wrong with this inherently, but the LATIN LETTER C is unused it would be more convenient for Uzbeks to use that letter; then they could use ISO/IEC 8859-9 just as Turkey does. (The fax is unclear as to which of LATIN J and LATIN J WITH STROKE is used for CYRILLIC ZHE and CYRILLIC ZHE WITH DESCENDER but LATIN C and LATIN C WITH CEDILLA could be used in some combination for those two letters.) Only J occurs in the text below.

In the columns, Bosma is the Latin letter printed, Yozma is the Latin letter handwritten, and Talaff. is the pronunciation of the name of the letter in Uzbek.

Comment on the state of the use of the Latin script in Uzbekistan or other Central Asian republics is invited.
